CARNIVAL x ASICS Gel-Kayano 12.1 "Hidden Layers of Phra Nakhon"
A neighborhood woven into a shoe. The CARNIVAL x ASICS Gel-Kayano 12.1 "Hidden Layers of Phra Nakhon" arrives as the Bangkok boutique's 15th anniversary collaboration — a release that does not simply apply graphics to a silhouette but builds an entire architectural and cultural narrative into the construction of the shoe itself. CARNIVAL has spent fifteen years earning the creative latitude that this release requires. Phra Nakhon, the historic heart of central Bangkok, has spent centuries accumulating the layers that the shoe attempts to reveal. Together, they have made something that rewards the closest possible attention.
The most defining feature is the crochet-knit toe box and side panels — stitched in cream thread in a Thai Kanok-inspired pattern that references the traditional motifs woven into Thai decorative arts for generations, the textile detail applied to a performance silhouette with the kind of cultural specificity that separates genuine tribute from surface reference. Beneath the crochet overlay, subtle hits of color emerge through the stitching — the hidden layers the title promises, the details that reveal themselves only to those willing to look through rather than at the surface. The sole carries the neighborhood further into the construction: a spray foam-style addition replicates the texture of Phra Nakhon's streets at the base, the ground of the district literally underfoot. The insoles feature a diamond pattern drawn from the traditional Chula kite — the ceremonial flying objects that have been part of Thai cultural identity for centuries — while the Thailand-exclusive special box carries the same motif as an extension of the collaboration's documentary commitment to its source material.
The Gel-Kayano 12.1 platform draws from the 2006 original — the GEL-NIMBUS 17 tooling system, FLUIDRIDE technology, and rearfoot and forefoot GEL cushioning providing the performance foundation beneath the collaboration's textile and cultural exterior. CARNIVAL and ASICS have not made a shoe about Bangkok. They have made a shoe that is, in the most material sense possible, built from it — the street under the sole, the craft in the knit, the kite in the insole, the neighborhood in every layer. Fifteen years of earning the right to do this. One shoe that proves they had it.
